Ecclesiastes 7:3
Crying is better than laughing.
It blotches the face but it scours the heart.
The word "scour" really stuck out to me. The only time i've really heard that word used is when my mom would give us a list of house cleaning jobs and one of them was to "scour" the kitchen sink. So every time i hear that word i think of my yellow Dobie pad making suds as it rubs against our white kitchen sink. I also think of how my mom used to say that i had to use some "elbow grease" to really get the dirt off. (Btw, i always hated that term). So basically, scouring (to me) means to make something clean by putting some work into the job. And i think it's interesting how this picture fits in this verse. Crying is hard work, you know? It's painful and exhausting and wet. But according to this verse, "It blotches the face but scours the heart."
Sometimes it feels good to get it all out through tears. I've just ever thought of that as being a cleaning process.
